This document provides an overview of the features related to GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals) symbols within the Uncountable platform.
GHS features, which ensure compliance with international standards for chemical labeling and enhance safety communication, include:
- GHS symbols, or pictograms, are 9 visual indicators that quickly convey the type of hazard a chemical presents, such as toxicity or flammability.
- Hazard (H) statements are codes/associated statements that provide specific details on the nature and degree of the hazard such as “May cause cancer” (H350) or “Extremely flammable gas” (H220).
- Precautionary (P) statements offer guidance on the proper handling of chemicals, including instructions for storage, disposal, and first aid.
For more information on the GHS system, refer to GHS Classification.
GHS Features Field Options
Schemas in Uncountable come pre-loaded with some field options lists, including a list of GHS symbols and and a list of H statements available. To view field options lists, navigate to the “Field Options” tab of the Form Admin page.
GHS Codes
For a list of GHS codes (and associated H statement) field options, select “GHS” from the Options List.
Hazard Statements
For a list of only H Statement field options, select “Hazard Statements” from the Options List.
Precautionary Statements
Unlike GHS codes and H statements, P statements do not come pre-loaded. To add P statements to a recipe or other entity, users must create a new field options list.
1. From the “Field Options” tab of the Form Admin, enter a new option set name (i.e. Precautionary Statements) and click “Create Set”.
2. Add options to your list one at a time by entering a name, configuring the ID, and clicking “Add Option”.
Adding GHS Symbols to an Ingredient
GHS Symbols are added to ingredients as ingredient attributes. To add a GHS symbol to an ingredient, navigate to the ingredient’s details page. Under “New Attributes”, select “GHS Hazard Symbols” from the dropdown menu.
GHS Symbols belong to the Regulatory attribute category. Under “Ingredient Attributes”, select “Regulatory” and click “Set” GHS Hazard Symbols.
Select relevant GHS Hazard Symbols from the dropdown menu. In this example, six GHS symbols are added to the chemical 1-decene.
Once added, these symbols will appear on the chemical’s Ingredient Details page.
Once GHS symbols have been set, if that ingredient is added to a recipe, the associated GHS symbols will appear next to the recipe name.
Note: The underlying values of these GHS symbols are fully compatible with the GHS symbols field options list. This allows lots to inherit GHS symbols from ingredients and also supports the use of fields with ID sources for the field options.
Adding GHS Features to Experiments
To add GHS features to an experiment, users can set up an experiment metadata fields, drawing from the preloaded field options ID source.
Adding GHS Codes as Metadata
1. From an Enter page, click “Add Metadata” and select “Edit Fields” from the dropdown menu.
2. At the bottom of the “Edit Experiment Metadata Fields” page, click “Add Field”.
3. In this modal, name your new GHS Symbol field, select the “Fixed List (Multiple)” Field Type, and click the pencil icon to select your ID source.
4. Select “GHS” for your ID source Options Set, save, and click “Accept”.
5. From the Enter page, your new experiment metadata field will be available for selection in the dropdown menu.
6. Add the metadata field and select relevant GHS codes from the dropdown menu.
Adding H Statements as Metadata
To add H Statements, repeat the same process, this time selecting the pre-loaded “Hazard Statements” field option list as your ID source.
Adding P Statements as Metadata
To add P Statements, repeat the same process, this time selecting your manually-created “Precautionary Statements” field option list as your ID source.
Adding GHS Features to Entity Forms
GHS features can also be added to entity forms, such as lab requests or approvals, on the Form Admin page. In the example below, GHS codes and H statements are added to the Analytical Request definition.
1. Navigate to the “Definitions” tab on the Form Admin page and select the entity.
2. Under “Fields”, select existing GHS codes and/or Hazard Statement fields and click “Add Field”.
3. Once added to the entity’s definition, these fields will appear by default.
