Transitive Aggregate Columns

Transitive aggregate columns are a flexible column type that can be added to listings in Uncountable. These columns enable users to explore and summarize fields values, such as ingredient lists, associated users, or GHS symbols.

Using transitive aggregate columns, users can dig deeper into column fields. The process involves selecting an initial field, choosing a related field within it (i.e. Ingredients Used → GHS Symbols), and then specifying how the information should be aggregated—whether by listing all values, listing unique values, calculating totals, or totaling unique values.

Configuring Transitive Aggregate Columns

To add a transitive aggregate column to a listing, follow these steps:

Step 1: Access the Select Columns Modal

From the listing page, click “List” > “Set Columns” to open the Select Columns modal.

Step 2: Select a Field

In the “Add Columns” tab, begin by selecting your first field. This is the primary field you want to explore further.

Step 3: Add a Target Field

Next, click the “Select [Field Name] Column” button to choose a target field. The target field is connected to the first field and provides additional details or associations for deeper analysis.

Step 4: Select an Aggregation Type

This action will activate an Aggregate dropdown menu. Select one of the following aggregation types:

  • Collect: Displays all values from the selected field.
  • Count: Provides the total number of entries within the field.
  • Count Distinct: Provides the total number of unique entries within the field.
  • Distinct: Displays each unique value.

Step 5: Add and Save

Click “Add” to add the column, then select “Save” to apply and save your changes.

Use Case Examples

Displaying All Ingredients Used in a Lab Request

On the Lab Request listing, use a “Collect” transitive aggregate column to display all the ingredients used in experiments associated with each lab request.

Once added, the new column will display a complete list of all ingredients used in experiments tied to each lab request, making it easy to review experimental components at a glance.

Viewing all Unique GHS Symbols on Experiments in a Listing Table

On a Project listing, use a “Distinct” transitive aggregate column to identify all unique GHS symbols associated with each experiment.

The column will display a list of unique GHS symbols across experiments for each project, ensuring that duplicate symbols are excluded for a simple view of safety information.
